THUNDERSTORMS & TORNADOES

In the event of severe weather, the National Weather Service will issue any one of the following alerts:

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Conditions are favorable for a severe thunderstorm to develop with the potential to produce damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possible tornadoes.

  • Tornado Warning: A tornado has been confirmed by either a spotter or by radar. Ann Arbor's tornado warning system produces a loud steady tone when a tornado has been sighted or is likely to form (Please note, this siren is tested on the second Tuesday of every month at 1:00 pm). You should immediately take cover in an interior room or corridor on the lowest possible level of a building. If outdoors and there is no time to find indoor shelter, lie flat in the nearest depression.

In a Residence Hall: Proceed to the lowest accessible level. Remain in an enclosed, interior corridor with minimal exterior windows and doors until the warning has expired.

STAY CONNECTED!

Receive emergency alerts through the Division of Public Safety & Security app. Search U-M Public Safety in the App/Google Play store.

We have a new feature this year for those attending camps and conferences to temporarily opt-in to receive our campus emergency alerts via text. Users can text UMSUMMERALERTS to 67283 to receive the alerts. They will be enrolled for 45 days and will receive a text at the end of the 45 days letting them know that their enrollment has expired. If they would still like to receive the alerts, the expiration text will provide instructions to re-enroll for another 45 days.

Users may also choose to text the words LEAVE UMSUMMERALERTS to 67283 to unsubscribe to summer alerts at any time. Those that are already signed up to receive campus emergency alerts do not need to take any action and will continue to receive alerts as normal.
