GENERAL INFORMATION

HOUSEKEEPING: Depending on the room type, the bathroom will be shared with up to four other people of the same gender. 

LUGGAGE STORAGE: Luggage storage is available at the North Quad Community Center, based upon availability.

LAUNDRY FACILITIES: Laundry facilities are located on the third floor. They can be paid via quarters or the free Wash App (see below). The cost is $1.50 per load to wash and $1.50 per load to dry. Participants must bring their own detergent. Please note, not all laundry rooms have change machines.

LINEN (if applicable): Upon entering your room, you will find a linen packet. Inside of the linen packet will be the sheets and pillowcase for your bed. There will also be 2 towels, and a washcloth. If your stay in North Quad is longer than 7 days, you can exchange your linen at the Community Center during operational hours. Linen can be exchanged every 7 days thereafter. 

LOCK YOUR ROOM: The University is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. Please keep your room door closed.

SMOKING POLICY: University policy does not permit smoking in buildings, in facilities, on grounds and in university-owned vehicles. 

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION POLICY: University policy does not permit the consumption of alcohol in the common areas of the residence hall.

GUEST POLICY: Summer residents are responsible for the behavior of their guests. Guests are not permitted to stay overnight. Individual programs may have additional guest/visitation policies.

PET POLICY: Pets are prohibited from entering the residence halls at all times, even on a “visiting” or “temporary” basis. Accommodations may be made for service animals with advance notice and proper documentation.

MAINTENANCE CONCERNS: You may report any room/building problems by directly calling the North Quad Community Center at (734) 764-0206 during operational hours. For after-hours assistance please call (734) 647-2059.

 PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION

PARKING

Parking on campus is very limited. Please pay attention to the signs posted at each parking lot to avoid costly parking citations. Call Parking and Transportation Services at (734) 764-8291 or visit http://ltp.umich.edu/ for more information.

There is parking available at the City of Ann Arbor lots. City-owned parking facilities are marked by white signs with a green letter P (lots) or blue signs with a white P (structures). The rate in parking structures is $1.20 per hour. Rates for city meters are $2.10 per hour. All city parking is free on Sunday. For information on parking in Ann Arbor please visit:

TRANSPORTATION

On-campus transportation is free to all summer conference guests via our Blue M buses. Wear your lanyard or carry your Mcard in case ID is requested. There is limited summer bus service to and from North Campus; buses stop at Pierpont Commons, but no service is available to Bursley Hall or Baits Houses.

 RESIDENCE HALL LIVING

PROHIBITED ITEMS

In compliance with Michigan State Law, no person under 21 ears of age may possess, distribute or consume alcoholic beverages in the Residence Halls. Additionally, some buildings have been designated alcohol-and substance-free zones due to the many youth groups in residence. No alcohol may be consumed in these zones.

The University of Michigan and University Housing will not tolerate drug use in the Residence Halls. Possession and use of illegal drugs is against the law. The use or presence of drug-related paraphernalia is strictly prohibited.

Fireworks, explosives, and all weapons are absolutely prohibited in Residence Halls.

It is against the law to tamper with or misuse fire alarms, fire-fighting equipment, elevator alarms, emergency call buttons. Calling 911 from a Residence Hall in a non-emergency is prohibited.

The use of incense, candles or other open flames including lighters, matches, smoke bombs, snaps, etc. is strictly prohibited. Halogen lamps, laser pointers and hot plates are also prohibited in Residence Halls.

FOR YOUR SAFETY

• Exterior doors, rooms and bathrooms are locked at all times and should not be propped open.
• Digital cameras monitor all entrances and exits.
• Residence Halls are patrolled by Division of Public Safety and Security Officers.
• The U-M Emergency Alert System will keep you informed.

RESIDENCE HALL LIVING

Residence Hall standards for community living are established in compliance with state and federal laws and the bylaws of the University of Michigan Regents. This includes conduct while living in the halls and the use of its facilities. All participants must abide by these standards for a successful, safe and fun program.

Please behave appropriately and be considerate of others.

• Do not engage in sports activities inside the Residence Halls.
• Do not endanger others through physical or violent behaviors
• Harassment, including threats and/or damages to persons or property, will not be tolerated.
• Pulling fire alarms or tampering with fire safety equipment will result in fines and dismissal.
• Throwing items out of residence hall windows is a conduct violation.
• All crimes are reported to the Division of Public Safety and Security

DISCRIMINATION

Acts of discrimination or harassment based on an individual's race, sex, color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, age, marital status, disability, Vietnam-era veteran status or sexual orientation are serious violations of University Housing policy. Sexual harassment is illegal under state and federal law, offenders may be subject to prosecution.

FURNITURE

All university furniture provided in individual rooms at check-in must remain in those rooms. Please leave mattresses on the beds. Furniture will not be removed from rooms based on occupancy. Lounge and study room furniture may not be removed or transferred to individual rooms.

DAMAGES

The contents of all residence hall rooms are inventoried. Damages to the room or to the University property will be assessed and charged equally to those who are responsible. Charges will be assessed if excessive cleaning of a room, bathroom, lounge or public area is required.

During your stay, please do not:

• Tamper with or remove window screens,
• Throw anything out of the windows,
• Remove, disassemble or move any room or lounge furnishings, or
• Attach anything to the walls

Violation of these rules and regulations may result in discipline, up to and including immediate dismissal from the program and subsequent U-M programs.

 EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

When you arrive, identify the closest stairwell in case of an emergency, and designate an emergency meeting place with group members. Live-in building staff will provide instructions about evacuation, shelter, or appropriate action. Please follow instructions from building staff or Public Safety Officers.

FIRE

Evacuation routes are posted on the back of each door. In the event of a fire or fire alarm, leave the building immediately closing doors while evacuating. Move away from the building and stay with your group. Do not return to your room or building until you are given an "all clear" by Public Safety Officers.

Evacuation Location:

1. If exiting from the East (primary) side of the building – Utilize the far East courtyard area near Rackham
2. If exiting from the North side of the building – Cross Huron Street (*utilize crosswalks*) to assemble on the North side of the street
3. If exiting from the South side of the building – Cross East Washington to assemble on the South side of the street
4. If exiting from the West side of the building – Cross State Street to assemble on the West side of the street
5. In the event of inclement weather during a fire emergency, North Quad Academic first and second floor lobby areas on the South side of the complex may be utilized if such section is not under evacuation. If entire North Quad complex is under evacuation, the 202 South Thayer complex may be utilized, contact Housing Security or U-M Police to gain access 

POWER OUTAGE

If your building loses power, proceed to an area that has windows, or go outside if possible. Flashlights may be available at the Community Center. (Candles should never be used in U-M Residence Halls.) Housing Security Officers will advise you regarding any further action.

THUNDERSTORMS & TORNADOES

In the event of severe weather, the National Weather Service will issue any one of the following alerts:

• Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Conditions are favorable for a severe thunderstorm to develop with the potential to produce damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possible tornadoes.
• Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A severe thunderstorm is imminent. Proceed indoors immediately and stay away from large windows. Be prepared to take cover.
• Tornado Watch: Weather conditions are favorable for possible tornado development.
• Tornado Warning: A tornado has been confirmed by either a spotter or by radar. Ann Arbor's tornado warning system produces a loud steady tone when a tornado has been sighted or is likely to form (Please note, this siren is tested on the second Tuesday of every month at 1:00 pm). You should immediately take cover in an interior room or corridor on the lowest possible level of a building. If outdoors and there is no time to find indoor shelter, lie flat in the nearest depression.

ACTIVE ATTACKER

In the event of an active attacker on campus, you have 3 options: Run, Hide or Fight

• Follow all instructions from officers
• Keep your hands visible at all times
• Tell officers where the attacker is, if known
